February 1, 2009: Changes in the TAMU LDAP Directory Infrastructure

Texas A&M University's Directory Services are undergoing a major upgrade over the course of 2009. The Steering Committee has completed their review of the schema and defined several new attributes, some of which have already been populated. Within the next several months, the remainder of the approved changes will be implemented.

These changes include:
  • Obsolete attributes will be deprecated.
  • New attributes will be added to the schema and populated.
  • A new enterprise LDAP directory will be brought on-line.
    • The enterprise directory (view schema) will be the core repository of enterprise-level information for all individuals and will be the directory housing campus NetID accounts. Campus authentication and authorization will rely on this directory.
    • Access to the new enterprise directory will be governed by security policies as established by the office of the Chief Information Security Officer.
  • operator.tamu.edu will become the white pages directory.
    • The white pages directory (view schema) will support:
      • the campus Directory Search and applications wanting to connect to a public directory
      • @tamu.edu and @neo.tamu.edu email routing
    • If a student requests that their personal information not be publicly accessible, that information will not be loaded into the white pages directory.
  • NetID account deletion is going to be much more timely.
We have been working with TAMU HR to develop new rules governing account deletion for employees. These will be implemented Summer 2009.

Important Dates in the Upgrade:
